Windows xp updating time
If you have never done a critical update before, you may need to allow Microsoft to install an "Update Installer" before your system can be checked and updated. If there are several updates which need to be installed, it may take your system some time to download and install the updates. If you have not done a critical update check recently, it may take considerable time, depending upon the status of your system.Cleanest way would probably be to have the user test from a workstation that is not on the domain. The protocols used to contact domain controllers (specifically Kerberos) are based on the computer's time.Microsoft periodically releases updates (also known as patches) to Windows XP that are considered to be critical to protect a computer running Windows XP from intrusion by a computer hacker.

You might need to update drivers in Windows when a new piece of hardware you've installed doesn't work automatically or maybe after upgrading to a new version of Windows.
Updating drivers is also a great troubleshooting step when the device is having some kind of problem or is generating an error, like a Device Manager error code.
You mean, automatically checking for updates is still working in XP? There is an 80072EFE error shown in Windows Update log file (Just as in Vista last days). That error could indicate a malware rootkit infection.
